Ant and Roach Season in Tampa Bay: What Works, What Does Not, and When to Call

Summer humidity turns Tampa Bay kitchens into ant highways and palmetto bug landing zones. Most DIY spraying makes it worse. Here is what actually works.

Ant and Roach Season in Tampa Bay: What Works, What Does Not, and When to Call

Why the problem explodes every summer

Heat plus afternoon rain is rocket fuel for insects. Ant colonies expand and push scouts indoors looking for food and dry ground. Outdoor roaches, the big palmetto bugs, get flushed out of saturated mulch and sewers and head for the nearest structure. If your kitchen sees a trail every June, this is why.

What does not work

Spraying the ants you can see kills a few dozen workers out of a colony of tens of thousands, and repellent sprays can split ghost ant colonies into several new ones. Foggers drive German roaches deeper into walls and appliances. Store-bought perimeter sprays wash off in the first afternoon storm. The pattern is the same: visible activity drops for a week, then returns worse.

What actually works

Species identification first, because the right bait for one ant is the wrong bait for another. Slow-acting baits that workers carry back to the queen. Insect growth regulators that break the roach breeding cycle. A professional-grade exterior barrier applied to the zones insects actually travel, refreshed on schedule because Florida weather erodes everything. And sealing the entry gaps so the pressure outside stays outside.

When to call a professional

Call when trails return after treatment, when you see roaches in daylight, when winged ants appear indoors, or when you are treating symptoms more than once a month. One structured treatment plan usually costs less than a summer of store-bought products, and our plans carry free re-treats between visits if covered pests come back.
